GARDEN NEWS AND A MOVE !

GARDEN NEWS AND A MOVE

I discovered this week that my garden is in trouble!  We have planted literally hundreds of Buxus plants and they have not fared as well as they should.  I discovered last week, that they are diseased.  They have been attacked by mites which has resulted in new growth being very weak and deformed.   Anyway,  I jumped into action and phoned here and there and also found good advice on Google.  We had to cut out all of the diseased parts,  cut the whole plant back severely and spray and feed.  The spraying against the mites and die-back is to be done every two weeks and the feeding also every two weeks in between!

Blissfully unaware of this trouble,  other plants have behaved really well!  There have been lots of late flowers.  The Dahlias have been incredible.  I have only three bulbs planted in one raised bed and I have had more than enough flowers for the house this whole summer.

The bees love the Sedum

The roses have given us a pre-autumn flush and I'm hoping for more!

The other news is that we moved out of our terrace in Sydney this week.  After 10 years of having a home in Sydney,  this will be an adjustment.

Some of the furniture was taken off our hands by the kids,  some of it went into storage and a little    arrived here in Bowral.  The butcher's rack is displaying the potted box in the courtyard and my Auriculas now have a home on a metal table on the back veranda in front of a large mirror! I have had some kind advice via Instagram on how to manage these beauties and so hope they will flower in Spring!

The bookcases in my study were installed today.  All of the junk which has been stored there since the move a year ago has now been moved out and is in urgent need of sorting and editing.  I will post of photo in my next post when it looks a little more finished.

The Autumn weather has been wonderful.  Walks are such a pleasure free from the heat.  There has been quite a lot of cricket on at the Bradman Oval and we often walk past and sit and watch a few balls.

Happy Easter everyone!

    1. Thank you FF. I have kept it and it is now in the living room in Bowral. The buxus are a big worry and I'm crossing everything. Got my tickets from Highgrove today!!! xxx

    2. Found my way here from FF's blog! You house, garden, flowers and apartment all totally gorgeous.

It must have been heart-wrenching to give up such a beautiful Sydney terrace.

Sorry to hear about your buxus - remember in 2013, when I was participating in the same UK Garden Tour as FF, hearing that a similar disease was attacking and killing long establish buxus hedges and other plantings in England, including in star gardens. Tragic, no?! Apparently there are other varieties of buxus that may be more resistant (if I'm remembering correctly). Best wishes, Pammie

    3. Dear Pammie, So lovely you've stopped by!... thanks to FF. Thank you for the lovely comments and yes the buxus issue is worrying but I'm sure we'll get on top of it! I have English Box as the Japanese Box tends to 'yellow' here during Winter. Hopefully it will recover quickly! Thanks again, Jenny x

  3. Jenny, I absolutely love your dahlia-Munstead Wood and will be seeking it out to plant in my farm garden. The colour will go very well with the autumn flowers and i love a showy, prolific flower. I am also going to plant sedum, that seems to have been a good show as well and works so well with Munstead Wood.

Selling your home in Sydney will be an adjustment for you- I moved down to Melbourne from the farm 16 years ago when we were educating our four children ( I couldn't do boarding school- even though i think the kids would have been fine!!!) and even though they have all left home, I love spending our weekends here. I cant quite give it up yet even though it would make better economical sense if we did.
I so love your pictures of your beautiful homes and gardens- you have a great eye and beautiful design. I for one cant wait till your book comes out. All the best with that

    1. Hi Marilyn... how lovely to see your comment!... thanks so much. I didn't make it very clear on my post, but Munstead Wood is actually a David Austin rose! I will go over and clarify this! The Dahlias I showed also have very deep red/crimson colours and they look wonderful with the Sedum. The economic sense of it all motivated us to sell the terrace as we never got there enough. I would still however like to have a small flat I think! Thanks for the encouragement regarding the book. It is all still in the planning stages and is a far bigger undertaking than I anticipated! I will make it happen though! Thanks, Jenny

    2. Oh Jenny, my mistake, I realised it was the name of the rose after I sent the comment. I don't have this rose in my garden either- so it will be another one to add to the farm, but I will seek out the dahlia. You wouldn't know the name of it by any chance?
      Thanks Marilyn

  4. Your dahlias are absolutely stunning.
I particularly love the colour pairing of the apricot rose (is it an Ashram?) and the burgandy dahlias - so beautiful.

    1. Yes!... you are right - it is Ashram rose - a superb rose in every way! Thanks so much for the lovely comments ... I am a new grower of dahlias and am now obsessed! Hoping to get a couple more for next year! Thank You xx

  5. hi Jenny
It drives a gardener crazy when there's a problem. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. The dahlia's are amazing. I've just decided to order the rose Just Joey for my garden as they seem to do so well in my neighbourhood and smell divine. I could understand you not wanting to part with any of your beautiful furniture. Such a beautiful room. Can't wait to see the Bradman oval for myself.

    1. Hi Karen, Thanks for the lovely comment! My late mother's favourite rose was Just Joey and I think I will get it too if only for that reason. I adore the colour anyway. The bradman Oval is such a pretty place and just up the road from us. We are lucky having it close by. Thank You xx

  6. Although i'm certainly no gardener, I can see how much work you must put into a garden to reap the rewards. Seeing the results of your labours really proves that it is all worth it: Your garden is breathtaking!

  7. Greetings from DC, Jenny!
Lovely to find you and your beautiful dahlias! What a show! So sorry about your boxwood. Speaking of box, the blight is making its way to the States. My poor English box are not looking good. I am thinking of replacing them....not sure with what though.
    Cheers

  8. Lovely to see you here Loi!... Can't imagine anything as upsetting as an established hedge being attacked by the blight. Japanese box might be the answer. It tends to 'yellow' during the winter months, but it is much tougher. Thanks so much for stopping by! Cheers Jenny
